Ms. Susan Muriungi is the Regional Director for Africa at Protection International. In her current role she is responsible for steering the strategic direction of the organization to create an enabling environment for African Human Rights Defenders (HRDs) to enjoy their Right to Defend Human Rights (RDHR). Before this she was the Country programmes Coordinator at Konrad Adenauer Stiftung in Kenya. While here she played an instrumental role in linking emerging political leaders, especially the youth with opportunities to strengthen their leadership skills. Susan has vast experience in governance, democracy, peace and security, youth, gender and human rights among other subjects. She is passionate about social justice and has worked on programs and research in implementation and policy influencing capacities.
Susan has a Bachelors degree in Arts (Sociology and Economics) from the University of Nairobi, Masters of Arts Degree in International Relations from the United States International University in Nairobi and Masters of Arts degree in Conflict, Security and Development from King’s College, London. She is also undertaking a PhD at the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg where the title of her thesis is, Civilian Military relations in Kenya’s quest for Security in the Horn of Africa: Where is the civilian?
